ABOUT ME
Before moving to Texas, I taught in Oklahoma for several years. I had been teaching junior high and high school students while I was getting my degree and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue with it. I became active in the Oklahoma Flute Society and was one of the three Co-Chairs of the Society’s November 2003 Flute Fair featuring guest artists Walfrid Kujala and Helen Blackburn. However, there were not enough students in the area for me to make a living, so I moved to Texas to start a full-time studio. I was very excited to find the band programs here so well organized (and eager to accept private teachers into their programs!) and the students such a joy to teach. In January of 2005, I joined the brand-new Greater Fort Worth Community Band playing flute and piccolo and have enjoyed getting together with other teachers and community members to perform regularly (in the summer of 2007 we performed at the Texas Bandmasters Association convention in San Antonio). I was named outstanding soloist in the graduate student/teacher/professional category at the Texas Flute Society’s Flute Festival in 2006 and have recently been playing in a woodwind quintet made up of other private teachers from the North Texas area.
My flute is an all-silver Muramatsu with a Drelinger headjoint, and my piccolo is a Hammig with a modified wave headjoint.
EDUCATION:
I graduated with special distinction from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor’s degree in flute performance. While there (studying with the wonderful Valerie Watts), I was active in many chamber groups and was the principal flutist for three years in the university’s Symphony Orchestra. I was named outstanding undergraduate flute student three years in a row and also received the School of Music’s awards for outstanding sophomore, junior, and senior.
I have attended the Aria International Summer Academy in Canada, where I studied flute with Bonita Boyd (The Eastman School), Walfrid Kujala (Northwestern University), and Ransom Wilson (Yale University).
I am very much indebted to Joan Smith in Norman, Oklahoma, who gave me my first 6 years of flute instruction.
